Washington, which has a mining history is in Tyne and Wear in the North East of England positioned close to the Cities of Sunderland, Newcastle upon Tyne and Durham. Nissan car plant ( N.M.U.K.) is on its border with Sunderland which has enabled the New Town ( designated in 1964 ) to diversify from mining to supply manufacturing components to the car industry.
